Influence
Through Weird Tales in the 1920s—the magazine that, from 1923, named and first sustained the American weird tale as a pulp genre—Lovecraft stated a method of cosmic indifferentism and a set of names later writers extended. Dagon (1919; Weird Tales, October 1923) is the early sketch and his first appearance in that magazine. Amateur-press first appearances held here include The Statement of Randolph Carter (1920), The Cats of Ulthar (1920), The Terrible Old Man (1921), The Music of Erich Zann (1922), and The Tomb (1922). Herbert West—Reanimator (1922; Home Brew serial) and The Lurking Fear (1923; Home Brew serial) are the early novelettes. The Rats in the Walls (March 1924), Imprisoned with the Pharaohs (May–June–July 1924, magazine byline Houdini), The Festival (January 1925), The Outsider (April 1926), The Horror at Red Hook (January 1927), The Colour Out of Space (Amazing Stories, September 1927), and Pickman’s Model (October 1927) belong to the same period as Cool Air (Tales of Magic and Mystery, March 1928), The Call of Cthulhu (February 1928), The Silver Key (January 1929), and The Dunwich Horror (April 1929). The debts run backward to Blackwood, Machen, Chambers, and Hodgson.
